in the tank (dam) was finished, when we were obliged to use the mine water
for feeding boiler.  Its density is greater than any on the line,
consequently great care is necessary in its treatment.  I have been
successful in the matter, but this and rearrangement of pipes for it
compelled the battery to be idle on several occasions, so its duty has not
been up to average.  The arrival of new condenser will, I hope, do away
with this difficulty, meanwhile special care shall be taken in the matter.
 Total stoppages for the fortnight, three days, making a run of nine days.
 Crushed 100 tons of stone yielding 109 ozs. smelted gold.  This result is
satisfactory to me, considering the length of time idle and speed of
going."  We also learn from Mr Saunders that the returns from the
Melbourne Mint for 134 ozs. of the above Company's gold yielded £534 11s.
6d. gross, being at the rate of £3 19s. 9 1/2 d. (about) per oz.

THE CENTRAL G.M. COMPANY.

Mr W. E. Clifton, legal manager of the above Company, has received the
following report from the mine manager, Mr Henry Ryan, under date,
Southern Cross, September 9th: — I am in receipt of both yours of the 27th
ult. and 3rd inst.  I have to report for the fortnight ending on the 6th.
Cleaned up at the battery; yield, 57 ozs. 8 dwts., from 100 tons; not much
over six days' full crushing.  I was unable to get the battery started
before the night of the 27th.  The broken shank gave more trouble than I
anticipated, besides other repairs.  Got the new set of steel shoes put on
while stopped.  The boiler has not been cleaned for six weeks; got it
filled with cold water on Sunday morning to cool, and started a night
shift to clean it; got it now thoroughly claimed, and will start the
battery to-night.  Still stoping back of the intermediate level and
breaking the usual amount of stone from there.

Thirty-five tons of tin were shipped by the s.s. Rob Roy to-day, and
fifteen tons are expected to arrive from the fields this week.
