that the trunk roads should start from Youndegin, Mr Eaton's inn, a little
over 70 miles from York, at which place branch roads from Beverley, York,
Northam, and Newcastle should converge.  The road, as already explained,
will follow the present York road to Morannoppin and Doodlekine, and from
the latter place will take nearly a bee-line across to the 17-mile tanks,
and thence to Southern Cross.  The principal station will be Doodlekine,
which, by the straightened road, will be a little over 70 miles from York.
 This will also allow of one changing station between York and Doodlekine,
and two between Doodlekine and Southern Cross.  Mr Surveyor King has
already commenced clearing the road from Southern Cross westwards, and is
probably, some distance advanced with the work.  Meantime, Mr F. Brockman
has received instructions to clear the road at this end, and will commence
immediately.

At present, no water has been found on the direct road between Doodlekine
and Southern Cross, but it is confidently expected that the efforts being
made in that direction will be successful.  Mr Raeside has received
instructions to engage thirty men with a view of furthering the water-
boring or tank-constructing operations.  What has been done already leads
to confident anticipations that water will be found either at a moderate
distance in wells or in the soakages at the granite rocks, or in catchment
tanks.

With regard to the telegraph line, it will be remembered the majority of
the Finance Committee were in favour of advising the construction of the
line without delay.  This view has been endorsed by the Executive Council,
the view of the latter being, however, that the question of providing the
funds necessary for the completion of the work should be left over to the
new Government.  In order, however, that there should be no delay, His
Excellency has decided to indent the material from England at once,
consequently the order for the wire, insulators and batteries will be sent
home by the next mail.  By the time they arrive here the new Constitution
should be in working order and the Government should be able to take steps
to perfect this most important work.  In the case of the telegraph line
also, it is intended to establish a station at Doodlekine — in fact, as at
present intended, this will be the only station between the Eastern
districts and the fields.

MINING NEWS.

It is stated that the directors of Fraser's GM Company have decided to
send up to Southern Cross, without delay, another ten head of stampers for
the battery.  This will make twenty head of stampers in all at work on the
mine.

The directors of Hope's Hill Company expect to be crushing in the course
of the next six or seven weeks.  At Uphill Company's mine it is hoped that
they will commence to put stone through their battery sometime during the
next fortnight, or a little later.
