Abstract:
MINING NEWS

THE CENTRAL G.M. COMPANY.

Mr W. E. Clifton legal manager of the above Company, has handed us the
following report from the mining manager, dated Southern Cross August
12th: — Report for the fortnight ending on the 9th.  Finished cleaning up

and started the battery again on Sunday night.  Yield 71 oz. from 120 tons
of stone, a little over nine days' crushing.  Rise from bottom level to
immediate shaft, 4 feet.  Still carrying the stope south back of immediate
level.  Gold showing in the face rise from back of same level 17 ft.  The
air in it is becoming light: if much lighter will have to sink from the
surface to meet it.  Shifted the men from the north cutting, and put them
to break stone where I got a prospect north of the furthest shaft south on
the lease.  A set of steel shoes, five of the old dies, four pinion
wheels, five drums of oil, and one case with canvas and other things
arrived on the 30th.  Re a main shaft to work the mine, as I am doing at
present, will require extra hands to sink it.  As a probable cost here for
the first 100 feet, taking all the drawbacks into consideration, such as
want of skilled labour, and high price of timber, I dare say from £7 to £8
per foot.  — (Signed)
HENRY RYAN.
