28-IV-73
Menilya to Dampier - stopped to collect snails at river.
2-V-73
BRW, LJ & SSS to Rosemary I.; Heavily lammelate[?] unbanded & smooth unbanded on ridge, banded & pupoid forms in valley under spinifex rock carriage.

AB & SSS collected supra, high intertidal & reef crest, Kendrew Island - Boat Bay - Citadel area;
(1) Supralittoral - splash zone - Mainland opposite Citadel; Littorinids - in shaded areas in rock pools, Filamentous green alga in pools.
(2) High Intertidal - Mainland opposite Citadel; Oyster zone to base of cliff, spiny chitons, Clavarizona type chitons, Siphonarians - with egg masses?, Patellids, Thais hippocastanum, burrowing barnacles cf "Ibla", Brachydonotes sp. - in crevices among oysters, cf Vanikoro sp. among oysters, Saccostrea sp. - singly above & below dense oyster zone, Planaxid - one specimen at upper limit of oyster zone, Barnacles on old oyster shells.
LJ found Monodonta labio on Rosemary I - high intertidal rocks - none so far at Kendrew
(3) Reef Crest - Front Reef N of Citadel (seaward of run-off zone), low tide - 0.4m, on & under boulders & dead coral clumps - in sand beneath boulders; Trochids -small, Gibbula Clanculus (& Vanikoro) - under boulders & dead coral, Fissurellids - under boulders & dead coral, Small turbinids - in pockets in stone boulders, Pyramidellids - in sand under boulders (with holuthurian but not attached), Tectus - on stones, Trochus lineatus - under stones, Cypraea spp. - under boulders - caputserpentis generally in more exposed situations, Capulid - under boulder - with egg capsules, Haliotis sp. - on sides of boulders in depressions & under boulders, Cerithiids - in sand under boulders, Thais echinatium - under & on stones - other thaids & Peristernias & buccinids under stones, Conus dorreensis - in sand other cones under stones, Turbo cf argyrostomus - under & between boulders, Turbo sp. - under stones, Astraea sp. - on rock, Chitons - in crevices in rock. Bivalves: Isognomon sp. - in rock crevices, Carditid spp - in rock crevices, Spondylus spp - on rocks (few under), Ostrea sp. - under rocks, Arcids - under rocks, Venerids - in sand under boulder, Ass'd bivalve - in crevices & burrows in boulders, BRW & LJ collected burrowing molluscs & worms.
Th. 3-V-73
BRW & SSS started a transect from 40 metres to 60 metre mark. AB collected generally in moat area. LJ collected worms. RWG collected crayfish (as he did yesterday) & worked on erosion of rocks.
Fri. 4-V-73
Found second sp. of Littorinid (smooth) - in beach cave. AB found others in supralitt. above oysters, Boat Bay. Early PM all worked on Wester Sector I. RWG, LJ & BRW diving for starfish (5), AB & SSS measuring[?] marking (dipping arm into Nile Blue sulphate sol'n) & recording habitat etc data & taking gonad samples (2 only). Collected Avula & few other shells including large dead Chlamys (lividus?). Late afternoon on descending slide AN & LJ worked inner reef flat area - general collecting. BRW & SSS worked intersect (60-70 metres). Returned to camp at sunset & then worked very low tide infront of Citadel & to SW. Anne found - large camouflaging sea urchin, Astraea, Conus novahollandiae, Haliotis squamosus. Lindsay found Lambis. BRW & SSS - thorny & lamellate Spondylus (spp?) under rocks.
Sat 5-V-73
Worked Western Sector 2; 7? Acanthaster - 2 gonad samples taken
Inner ride of reef crest; Lambis, Typhis.
Sun 6-V-73
Worked evening tide, general collecting for BRW & Anne - I worked with Lindsay collecting live coral clumps ... on reef. - not very many worms. I collected some weed samples for washing (Caulerpa), 4 nudibranches in soft coral.
Mon. 7-V-73
Benthemia (large) found in weed washings.
9-V-73
(1) On cliff on south side of Camp Beach - photos. small oysters above oyster zone proper. Oyster zone proper [ zone description given]
(2)Area of Citadel; thaids [description of their predation and habits given]
(3)Area of cliff face North of Camp Beach near stake marking transect base; osyers, thaids [description of habit given].
Collected plants over Island, collected dead shells from sand bar.
10-V-73
Finished Western Sectors
Tues 15
Began cliff section of transect [Northern Sectors?] - from peg at base to oyster zone.
Wed. 16-v-73
Went to transect area to complete supralittoral section. Collected v. small spiny chitons & large smooth littorinids in beach cove on Musuem cove. Collected siphonarians - in transect area (or just SW of it), all animals whether above or below oyster zone are yellow spotted. However in sheltered cleft in rock (c sand) just S of stake the animals - necessarily supralittoral - are white spotted. Perhaps function of exposure.
Thurs. 17-V-73 onwards
Poor weather - gales etc prevented work
[At end of notes sketch and description of Transect, divided into subareas with descriptions, species mentioned listed below]
Transect - cliff face above datum peg on line with Transect line stake;
Area 1; algae & mytelids, Echinometra mathaei.
Area 2, 5cm - 36cm; Xenia & algae - red leafy & coralline, many burrowing mytilids & tube worms - a few burrowing barnacles, Barbatia sp., Venerupis sp. & Hipponicids & sipunculids(?) in crevices & burrows.
Area 3, 36cm to 63cm; Colonial anemones - mauve when contracted, tube worms - burrowing (black) & free (horny-pink), burrowing barnacles, with a few free barnacles (lower) & Lithothamnion.
Area 4, 63cm to 107cm; single anemones (green & grey when expanded), oysters singly & in clumps of 2-4. large barnacles on oysters - burrowing barnacles, filamentous green alga.
Area 5, 107cm to 152cm; Oysters (single), Patellids, large barnacles, Siphonarians, many burrowing tube worms, fewer burrowing barnacles than in Area 4, some anemones (single) in deepest depression of notch with green alga, otherwise Lithothamnion.
Area 6a, 152cm to 210cm; Oyster zone proper.
Area 6, Small depression in Oyster zone, 188cm level at bottom of depression.
Area 7, Oyster ridge on platform rising about 8cm above general platform level, of 210cm from peg; Among oysters - small bivalves (Kellia?) & small gastropods like Vanikoro, with small glassy barnacles, pale anemones (perhaps Sipunculids), worms (nereids).
