[Travel to Beacon Island]
25-VI-85 Tuesday
Got up at 7.30 after very wakeful night. After breakfast went swimming. Sam, Linda, Louise & I swam over area out from bay to E of station - out over N end of reef to west & along reef bordering Goss Passage. Students & Sam had sessions on the hookah[?] from jetty. During afternoon I organised Jayne & Bruce to do the transect project - out from bay on N side of island - I set up microscope - sorted animals. - collected some tube dwelling operculate worms - Serpulids? for Louisette - Worms orange -red - tubes almost papery & after fused together - collected from 1-2m in bay to NE side of island. Other "serpulids" on weed (Sargassum) - apparently not operculate.
26-VI-85
Went over to Long Island. Collected in pools on N half of island.
#1 - most northerly has recently been invaded by waves - apart from Austrocochlea & Bembicium no other organisms observed except for dead drift Sargassum.
#2 -Next pool south is notable because of the large amount of v. large Ulva plants - c thalli up to aobut 2x0.75m - in general of robust texture - some less robust (moribund) are holed. Amphipods; Opisthobranch egg strings (?Bulla); Austrocochlea; Bembicium; "Leptons"; Cladocerams (dark red); Serpulids ? under rocks; Chitons; anemones.
#3 -Pool at about centre of island on W side. Plenty of Bembicium; Austrocochlea; Amphipods; remains of Vermetids; crabs; orange-tan sponge under rock; orange worms - white bristles.
Went swimming in Goss Passage off SE end of Long Island. Collected chamids 1-3m for Professor Purcham[?]. Collected oysters. Chamids 2spp.
(1) Shell white & mauve. Exterior of anterior aperture clear light brown with granules of white or cream. Interior & posterior part of & to this aperture is clear mud brown. Interior of posterior aperture dark brown round edges (c clear white tentacles) & orange (opaque) peripheral to that with white opaque granules at post end. Gills orange(opaque) internallu ? gonads.
Used Patrick's telescope (tele-lens) to look at 1/2 moon. & Jupiter c 4 moons & Betelguese (2 stars).
27-VI-85
Felt ill so didn't go diving. Did lab work. Helped students with transect & salinity projects. Sam & Pat went out hoping to get to wreck site - too rough so they went to Coral Gardens area & dived down slope. Pat brought back a spondylid & 2 small chamids from 100' (slope of about 45° to sandy plain bottom). Sam brought back some vermetid shells from about 25' - narcotised few[?] serpulids.

THE SPRING GULLY T.M. COMPANY.
The following report, dated Spring Gully, August 8th, has been handed to
us by Mr W. E. Clifton, legal manager of the above company: — Yours of the
20th July came duly to hand, in which you state tin bags and tools were
forwarded: none have arrived here to date. Re Barrow wheels: I have
managed to get on with what I have got, and don't think will require any
more. The assay returns you state, are certainly very low. However, I
may inform you the tin in the lower face I recently knocked off, is of
very inferior quality and sheelite being very plentiful with it, which is
not possible to separate from it, by ordinary streaming. The tin in the
face at present working is more free from it, and will give a better assay.
The bags obtaining the inferior will be duly marked. I am not by any
means getting on as satisfactorily as I would wish. I have been stopped
washing the last few days, through the box man and others leaving; they
having taken a tribute on their own account. I, therefore, had to confine
myself to stripping.
A large quantity of wash is now uncovered and ready for sluicing. I will
have the necessary quantity of hands on Monday. Washing will then be
continued forthwith. Since starting Mulligan's face, I had only one days
washing, which turned out six buckets of dirty tin. This is undoubtedly
far better ground than the face I last wrought. However, I may inform you
the best ground on the mine, so far as I know of it up to the present, has
undoubtedly been wrought out. I do not say, but there may be better tin
on the mine than any yet found, for I notice very little prospecting has
been done. It appears to me every manager that has been here, devoted his
attention entirely to rooting out a bit of tin in the gully where they got
the best prospects. I must say I cannot see my way clear to give the
Company satisfactory results, and I consider it is only wasting public
money and employing the class of men that are here as miners. In my
opinion the most profitable way for those concerned would be to let their
ground on tribute.
I am sorry I am under the necessity of giving you the usual month's notice
from the above date, and tendering you my resignation as manager for the
simple reason above stated, and it is not my desire by any means to stop
on a mine from which satisfactory results are not forthcoming.
I will dry the ore on hand and weigh it is as soon as possible. The
ground I have already stripped should turn out two tons of tin. However,
I will write you weekly the results.
(Signed) W. J. SHEPPARD,
Mine Manager.
THE RUBY G.M. COMPANY, KIMBERLEY
ACTION IN THE VICTORIAN LAW COURTS.
[ BY TELEGRAPH.]
(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)
MELBOURNE, August 14.
Mr Justice Hodges, of Melbourne, and Mr John Stanley, of Kimberley,
Western Australia, shareholder in the Ruby Queen Mining Company, have
brought an action against three of the directors, Major Fitzgerald Moore,
George Bullen, and Russell, as well as the English and Scottish Bank, and
Mr W. G. Mennell, liquidator of the company. The Bank holds a judgment
against the company, which is being wound up under an order obtained by
the bank. Mr Stanley is the vendor of the mine, and and [sic] received
11,000 shares as payment for it. He brings a series of charges against
the defendants. The directors, it is alleged, obtained an overdraft from
the bank, and use the company's money in connection with other mines and
acted in collusion with the Bank by allowing judgment to be recovered and
liquidation to take place. The plaintiffs have asked for an injunction to
restrain the liquidator from selling the company's plant. An adjournment
was granted for two months to enable the answering of affidavits from
Kimberley....

[details trip to Exmouth...] T3. Went to look at reef about 9pm (low water had been about 7-8pm). Upper intertidal sandy beach below that dissected beach rock(?) with shallow pools, dense mats of Halophila avata & sand, & algae & sand (red - not Laurencia) with a variety of other weeds in small quantities (Boodleopsis Penecillus Valonia etc). Poor diversity of molluscs - many hermit crabs, tube worms - sabellid - in sand, anemones in sand, portinids & mangrove crabs. (Cladophora or Derberia, 3 spp Caulerpa, Polysiphonia, Chylocladia, Sargassum, Padina, Avrainvillea). Collected snail shells Succincids (large) 2 miles N of Gascoyne River - with cats skull weavil - cicada nymph skins. Collected camaenids (Sinumelon) about third way between turnoff & Exmouth, shells on surface - live juvenile in soil under branches & litter.

We then went northwards along the coast from Mandu Mandu to Turquoise Bay. Just N of Mandu Mandu (about 0.5km) were some oyster rocks near shore covered with Saccostrea cuccullata. Just S of these rocks was an area of sand & rubble over rock strectching for a few hundred yards. the Dominant attached organisms were bunches of strap-like sponges - grey -fawn in colour with a very few corals. Seaward of this sponge area was a zone of basement rock with a fine cover of sand & encrusting sponges & corals. Seaward of this again was a zone of dead & living coral just like station 3 off Mandu Mandu - with the same encrusting sponges. Around the oyster rocks was a varied coral garden. As we went N from these oyster rocks the reef diverged from the coast to give a wider reef flat. Low cliffs developed along the shore with the slope above them littered with what looks like slabs of broken beach rock. A little way offshore - in the channel area - is a zone of red leafy algae wtith no straplike sponges. Going further northwards we came to a channel area in which the dominant benthic organism were brown algae - principally fucoids (but much shorted than at #13) with short laminates such as Padina. Going further N to a point just S of Turquoise Bay we came to an area of good coral growth with plenty of colonies of hard & soft corals in sand. [Sketch map of Turquoise Bay]
#TB1 #Turquoise Bay Station 1
West of Turquoise Bay on S side of Channel through reef,

MP2 - Outer end of Ningaloo Reef WA - passage though outer reef opposite Mangrove Creek approx 6m.
#MP2 Mangrove Creek Passage
outside on north-west corner of passage - dived briefly- without lung - on bombies - bad ear prevented me from making this a proper station. Proportions of algae much as at MP1 except that cover of 100% is on of about 70-80% living coral & there was thus proportionally less crustose corallines.

We all set off for Pilgramunna S of Mandu Mandu. Easily launched boats at High Tide. Went out to outer reef flat to look at Channel - seas too high to do any work in channel & rest of reef flat was easily seen from boat - tabular Acropora area very extensive on either side of channel. Went S of chanel & in over channel - sandy - to shallow water near length of coast fronted by low cliff of beachrock. The area investigated was fairly near to the N end of the cliff - the algal growth might be more extensive further south - even so it was very similar to the red algal zone seen - but not investigated - N of Mandu Mandu & just S of the coral area near Turquoise Bay. Perhaps the presence of the beachrock cliffs allows a deeper channel to form inshore - the sand is less mobile & shallower with the basement rock - presumably continous with the cliffs - closer to the surface allowing algal attachment. The same type of area allows coral (& sponge) growth inshore in perhaps deeper areas or areas further from the end of the cliff.
