has handed us the following report under date of October 3rd, 1890: —
Yours of the 27th to hand.  I will start prospecting on the 20-acre block
as soon as possible.  Since my last we have been engaged in stripping and
sluicing for the week.  I have raised and dressed 20 cwt. ready for the
market, so now I have got 43 cwt. ready, and I am in hopes of being able
to give you a fair output every week from this.  We had the greatest
amount of rain that has ever been on the tinfields today at eleven
o'clock, and it flooded all the gully, so water is plentiful now.  I will
forward this tin to Bunbury by the first team I can get, and I will give
you a further report of what tin I get by the end of next week....

previous managers devoted their time in rooting out the best tin, we, the
undersigned, workmen (we are not miners) under the former manager, beg to
contradict that statement, if you will kindly allow us space in your
valuable paper.  Instead of rooting out the best tin, Mr Mulligan, for six
weeks after his arrival on the claim, was working in a far worse face than
that with which Mr Sheppard is so disgusted, and with better results,
though under greater difficulties, as at that time there was a scarcity of
water, which involved more labour and loss of time in cleaning out the
dam.  He then commenced washing at the lower end of the workings with
better results, which kept improving slowly until we stopped for want of
tools.  We were then getting more tin per day than had been got since the
claim started washing, so instead of rooting out the best tin, as Mr
Sheppard stated in his report, we left it behind; moreover this was
pointed out to him on arrival at the claim.

He then says it is a waste of public time and money to employ the men who
are here as miners.  Surely that is more applicable to himself then the
men working here.  The former manager could obtain good results and
reflect credit on his men under greater difficulties than those with which
Mr Sheppard has had to contend.  For those reasons, coupled with the
poverty of the claim, he is compelled to resign.  Had he said that he
could not obtain men he would have been near the mark, for he has been
shorthanded since he came, until within this last week very few caring to
work under him.  It speaks but little for a man's integrity when he seeks
to hide his own deficiencies by passing such unmerited reflections as Mr
Sheppard does on the former managers of Spring Gully and working men of
Greenbushes.

following report dated Spring Gully, June 13th, from Mr. Jas. Mulligan,
the mining manager: "I have about two tons of tin dressed since last
Monday.  I got thirty-six tin bags, I intended to put one hundred-weight
in each bag, but there will not be enough.  During the early part of this
week, I had to extend the tail race, so I shall have only about thirty
hundred-weight by pay day.  I think I shall get the clean tin off the
ground about the 18th, but it is very difficult to get carriers.  At
present I can wash 5 or 6 hundred-weight per day, but there is a lot of
time lost in cleaning out the dam three times during the fortnight."

I herewith placed before you my report for the week ending 20th March.
After clearing the paddocks of mud and sand, pending the clearing of the
water, I put the men on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, clearing, burning,
stripping and gathering waste dirt, for future washing.  Thursday, Friday,
cleaned all the tin.  I am now drying and bagging as fast as the drying
will permit, and will send two tons to Bunbury next week, and as soon as
the dray comes back, I shall have another two tons drying and bagged ready
to sand.

TWO BARS OF GOLD FROM THE CENTRAL MINE.

At the Stock Exchange of Perth this morning Mr Park had on view that two
bars of gold he brought down from the Central mine, both of which have
been taken from the battery under his personal supervision, under the
direction of the Company's manager, Mr Ryan.  The two blocks measure about
nine inches in length, three inches wide and an inch in thickness, one
being of the weight of 64 1/2 ounces and the other 75 ounces — making a
total of 139 1/2 ounces in all.  This was obtained from the crushing of
about 115 tons of stone, of which quite twenty tons were more or less
rubbish, the crushing being the result of 11 day's work with a five-head
stamper.  In the work of separating the gold from the amalgam no
difficulty whatever was experienced, and it is also gratifying to be able
to state that salt water was used in the boiler without any perplexing or
unsatisfactory effects.

A SPECULATIVE OFFER FOR CENTRALS.

This morning and offer of £50 cash was made for the right to purchase 3000
Centrals at 45s. per share within twenty-four hours.  After the time of
our going to press the offer had not been taken advantage of.

THE STOCK EXCHANGE QUOTATIONS.

On' Change this morning Centrals were wanted at 28s. with sellers at 34s.
For Fraser's 1s. 9p. was offered, with sellers at 3s. In tin Bunbury (pro)
were wanted at 5s. 6p., with sellers at 8s., a shilling being offered for
contributing.  For Floyds (pro) 1s. was offered, with sellers at 3s.,
Spring Gully (pro) being offered at 1s. 6p. without buyers.

NEWS FROM SOUTHERN CROSS.

A correspondent at Southern Cross, writing under date of March 21,
reports: — By Mr Park, who accompanies this letter to Perth, the Central
gold is being sent down, the result of a crushing of almost a hundred tons
of stone.  The quality of the precious metal obtained in the satisfactory
working of the machinery is considered to be very favourable by every one
on the fields.  Personally I did not know what the result will show per
ton of stone, but if it goes anything over 25 or 30 dwts. it will be very
well, as they have put everything through that came out of the shafts and
drives.  The mullock had never been separated from the quartz.  They have
had some trouble with their gear wheels and had to stop for two days to
put in two teeth.  They started again yesterday and the stampers are going
ahead while I write.  The condenser boiler is fixed, but not in use as
they are short of the fittings.  The big boiler is not any the worse for
wear in using the water, as they condense and return nearly half the
steam.  It is now found that the shaft water is not nearly so salt as
Fraser's.  If the condenser works right so that the ten stamps can be kept
going there ought to be even a better return very certain from this
splendid mining property.  There has been no rain yet, and the water on
the road is all but done.  We cannot expect any more teams until rain
comes.  We are now existing on condensed water.  The alluvial workings are
gradually getting nearer the pub.  Those engaged thereon have a hard
struggle to get tucker by dry blowing, but they better be doing that than
nothing, as there can be no work on the mines while this letter lasts.

— The result of the Central crushing is for 11 days with 5 head, 139 ozs.

THE SPRING GULLY T.M. COMPANY.

The following report, dated Spring Gully, August 8th, has been handed to
us by Mr W. E. Clifton, legal manager of the above company: — Yours of the
20th July came duly to hand, in which you state tin bags and tools were
forwarded: none have arrived here to date.  Re Barrow wheels: I have
managed to get on with what I have got, and don't think will require any
more.  The assay returns you state, are certainly very low.  However, I
may inform you the tin in the lower face I recently knocked off, is of
very inferior quality and sheelite being very plentiful with it, which is
not possible to separate from it, by ordinary streaming.  The tin in the
face at present working is more free from it, and will give a better assay.

The bags obtaining the inferior will be duly marked.  I am not by any
means getting on as satisfactorily as I would wish.  I have been stopped
washing the last few days, through the box man and others leaving; they
having taken a tribute on their own account.  I, therefore, had to confine
myself to stripping.

A large quantity of wash is now uncovered and ready for sluicing.  I will
have the necessary quantity of hands on Monday.  Washing will then be
continued forthwith.  Since starting Mulligan's face, I had only one days
washing, which turned out six buckets of dirty tin.  This is undoubtedly
far better ground than the face I last wrought.  However, I may inform you
the best ground on the mine, so far as I know of it up to the present, has
undoubtedly been wrought out.  I do not say, but there may be better tin
on the mine than any yet found, for I notice very little prospecting has
been done.  It appears to me every manager that has been here, devoted his
attention entirely to rooting out a bit of tin in the gully where they got
the best prospects.  I must say I cannot see my way clear to give the
Company satisfactory results, and I consider it is only wasting public
money and employing the class of men that are here as miners.  In my
opinion the most profitable way for those concerned would be to let their
ground on tribute.

I am sorry I am under the necessity of giving you the usual month's notice
from the above date, and tendering you my resignation as manager for the
simple reason above stated, and it is not my desire by any means to stop
on a mine from which satisfactory results are not forthcoming.

I will dry the ore on hand and weigh it is as soon as possible.  The
ground I have already stripped should turn out two tons of tin.  However,
I will write you weekly the results.

THE RUBY G.M. COMPANY, KIMBERLEY

ACTION IN THE VICTORIAN LAW COURTS.

MELBOURNE, August 14.
Mr Justice Hodges, of Melbourne, and Mr John Stanley, of Kimberley,
Western Australia, shareholder in the Ruby Queen Mining Company, have
brought an action against three of the directors, Major Fitzgerald Moore,
George Bullen, and Russell, as well as the English and Scottish Bank, and
Mr W. G. Mennell, liquidator of the company.  The Bank holds a judgment
against the company, which is being wound up under an order obtained by
the bank.  Mr Stanley is the vendor of the mine, and and [sic] received
11,000 shares as payment for it.  He brings a series of charges against
the defendants.  The directors, it is alleged, obtained an overdraft from
the bank, and use the company's money in connection with other mines and
acted in collusion with the Bank by allowing judgment to be recovered and
liquidation to take place.  The plaintiffs have asked for an injunction to
restrain the liquidator from selling the company's plant.  An adjournment
was granted for two months to enable the answering of affidavits from
Kimberley.
