"The Australian soldiers serving in Timor during the 2nd World War owed the success of their campaign to defend Australia against a Japanese invasion and indeed their very survival to their loyal East Timorese helpers or "kriadu"
[criado]. Some 40,000 East Timorese lost their lives as a direct consequence of Australia's military presence in Timor. This is the story of the remarkable friendship between the kriadu and the Australian men who fought with the 2/2nd and 2/4th Commando associations, of the memorial created to honour the East Timorese contributions and sacrifice, and the genesis of the Dare Memorial Museum."
