"The Australian soldiers serving in Timor during the 2nd World War owed the success of their campaign to defend Australia against a Japanese invasion and indeed their very survival to their loyal East Timorese helpers or "kriadu" [criado].
Some 40,000 East Timorese lost their lives as a direct consequence of Australia's military presence in Timor.
