Abstract:
Letter requests school children to provide information as to the distibution and genus of fresh-water crayfish or gilgie in North-Western Australia. Two genera are currently known to occur in Australia - Astacopsis in Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia
and New South Wales and Chaeraps, with three species in the south west of Western Australia and a fourth species at Cape York and in Southern New Guinea. It is considered almost certain that this species at one time occured throughout Western Australia and the Northern Territory and possibly the gradual drying of the North-West of Western Australia exterminated it, providing an example of discontinuous distribution.
