[Travelled to Rottnest Island, Research Station]
After lunch went to Salmon Bay (E end) to coral patch - Loisette collected samples of all corals including Acropora (but excluding Porites which we couldn't find) for examination for reproductive condition (This is the week when spawning is predicted). Very little mollusc diversity - Campanile, Marmarostoma, Conus dorreensis, Dicathais - Cerithium, Octopus. Then went to Parker Point & Pocillopara Reef - greater diversity including Astralium tentarium which I collected (only dead A. squamifera found -no trace of A n. sp). In evening went to Kingstown for dinner & then "home" to work on animals. [Two sketches and molluscs of animals]
20-iii-90
Went to Fishhook Bay after breakfast. Swam around E side of bay looking for Astralium sp. - eventually found some near mouth of Bay at about 2-3m depth on corallines & other reds - even turf. none on brown algae or on seagrasses - (no greens). (see sample of most frequent substrate weed). Took samples of corallines for washing later (found 1 A. squamifermis in this weed). Then swam around W side of Bay - overturning rocks at 2-3m. - no sign of Astralium but found one Haliotis elegans - 1 juvenile H. scalaris & 1 juvenile H. sp (? conicopora) under stones. No Granata.  1 Fissurellid. (Loisette found 1 juvenile in weed washings later). Came back via Mary Cove to  see polygon pattern on reef Paddy thinks are formed & maintained by buff bream, territorial behaviour. [worked on material ferry to Hillary's] We went to North Point lloking for more polygons - no sign - collected few oysters under intertidal rocks - Hyotissa sp & ?Ostrea sp juveniles. Came home, went to Kingstown for dinner, worked on material afterwards. [Detailed descriptions of H. elegans, H. scalaris and H. sp. ?conicopora]
Wed 21-iii-90
After cleaning house went to look for polygons on reefs W & E of North Point but couldn't find them. Perhaps they have dissappeared from reef off Geordie Bay where sewerage outfall pipe is now located. Went back to Salmon Bay (E end) so that Loisette could collect second set of coral samples & I could look for Mystery trochids on articulated corallines. Couldn't find brown Goniopora noted by Loisette on previous trips but found many colonies of green Goniopora which resembles Montipora. Collected corallines (flat thallus) & later found about 8 Mystery trochids on it - 7 white, 1 brownish but not as dark as that previously found (on 19-iii). Still could not find 'any' live Granata - in fact no trochids at all except for "Mysteries" & a couple of dead Granata & Clanculus - ie none on weed under rocks, on reef etc.
