Letter from A.G. Weller, Collie.I am sending a specimen taken from the Collie River.It swam like an eel but it filled its mouth up with water, expanding the loose hanging flesh under its jaws.It then forces the water out though

little holes along each side of its back resembling a whale spouting but in this case sideways.At the same site there were small ones swimming around.Please identify.

Letter to A.G. Weller, Collie.The specimen you sent was the Wide mouthed Lamprey (Geotria australis).I was interested to hear of the use it makes of the curious bag on the throat as I have never seen one alive.If able, send specimens

of the smaller ones you noticed as I would like them for our collection. Young lampreys often differ very much from the adult form.

Letter from A.G. Weller, Collie.The place where I obtained the eel [sic] is now dry.I am looking for some young ones. Do they bury themselves in the mud?Please advise the best way to keep them alive until they reach you.In regard

to the formation at the throat, they live by suction. They would draw water and food into their mouth. The water would be expelled through the holes on their sides and the food would be caught in the saw like teeth.Please advise if my theory is correct and any other information you may have.

Letter to A.G. Weller, Collie.I am unable to give you more information about the habits of the lampreys as they are practically unknown.I think the small eel like creatures in the drying pool are probably Gordian worm.The specimens

would travel best wrapped in water weed rather than in water.Lampreys do not appear to be numerous in W.A. We have only received about 6 specimens in the last 4 years. The largest I have seen was about 2.5 feet long.
