This exhibition explores how humanity has mapped the WA coastline over the past four centuries. It challenges preconceived ideas of tenure of the Western Australian coast that arise during the celebration of Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog’s arrival
almost 400 years ago on 25 October 1616. Engraved Kimberley pearl shell demonstrating ancient, continent-spanning trade routes are exhibited alongside 17th century Dutch maps and other paintings, photographs and objects that reveal how human beings traversed, mapped and experienced the WA coast.
