To Parry's Inlet 20885 dep Albany. (Actually William's Bay) Coll Tursiops skull (buried[?] - [?] end) and coll. sets of teeth from Globicephala stranding. c 50 mins walk along beach from E end.

a.m. - saw female Eubalaena + calf calf close in to Middleton Beach. Watched c 1/2 hr. 1st whale pairing[?] seen alive! Photo black + white. Usual behavior. Went out to sea when approached by small boat with outboard (Press?) but was seen coming back in later afterwards. Estimate of calf size varied from 1/3rd (me) to >1/2 (PJ) of cow length.

Coll. 1 bucket beaks from stomach - v near/all that were there.

(2) NO mark male 39' 6" NO diatom stomach damaged - not ex'd

(3) 3 2 male 42'0"
Diatom - small spots + layer patches front + top of head, + upper side flukes[?] (mg[?] also be lower = not ex'd)
Stomach - v few beaks, digestion compartment? {2 fresh small squid one with light organ[?] (purplish skin)
2 other compartments (non digestive wall) 2 large? cucio squid one c 2-3" long (body) + a few more beaks ([?] masses of cucios coll)
2 bags tied[?] together

(5) inclusion[?] male 40'0"
Much skin gone, some [?] ?diatom pits but no recent diatom infections seen. Squid beaks + fluid in stomach a bit of recent flesh. As many beaks as poss. coll.

(4) 3 3 50'6" male. Ob'd diatom "circles" on head (top skin layer gone). A few "spots" on left lower c.p. S Cyamids [?] on front of head, top of head about level with eye, on ventral surface near umbilicus

much[?] skin gone. Many old diatom pits but no recent infection seen. 3' lost[?]

0735 40mm 040° from Albany (c 8m S of shelf due S. of entrance to Denmark Inlet).
(Scarcely[?] S of W Cape Howe -> Eclipse) 030 ChIII wits[?] blows 2 miles to the S. we go to investigate.
(Using a box search legs[?] from 3-6 minutes [sketch of search pattern] [?] at c 120[?] + 1700ft[?] asl)
To 0920 search at 700ft ahead (S) of ChIII, [?] low cloud + rain - the results 1 whale blowing 1 or 2 times the sounds + long[?] periods[?]. Not seen by us. 0925 bact at 1800ft heading N. to continue box search.

Sonar operator has whale on set - tilt[?] 40 c400 metres ahead etc. We go back to ChIII. Single bull missed! Came up later + then dived, at rear[?] as ChIII got close. Photo'd. We continue + [?] to E.
c1000 1 blow sighted 6 mile E of ChII. dropped oil marker. low cloud + rain in area. Whale search in area of shil[?] saw 3 whales with broad backs + fins - [?] [?] Sei - not seen again. Swimming close tog leading W. (ChII later reported 2 Sei in area[?])
1120 S of Warriups 1 large sperm at surface blowing + banging tail on surface. Several photos including 2 or 3 from 500'. 1135 4 more seen in same area (DME 130° 46m), all somewhat smaller - 3 together the larger one behind them and another single ahead [sketch of whale pod separation]
Later ChII took one of a pair [?] 2/co the 3 above. Saw [?] [?] bulb - including 5 [?] [?].
Also saw female and calf RI Whale in Middleton Beach (Photo'd)

evening spent going[?] along SE boundary of reserve. Casuarina, wandoo, malee, [?]. Only 1 rabbit (near station) 2 frogmouths (ditto) 2 roos (grey, female) near Marshall's fence at NE bdg, 1 tables[?] cat (Ken couldn't get a shot - near fence, out into paddock) and then 10 roos coming back into reserve from Marshall's paddock at c. 2110 about 100x from station.
[?] had seen woylies, possums, [?]!
On [?] up near dam c 2200 I saw 1 possum in peppermint + 1 fox below dam wall, got within 5x - v good condition.

Coll scats near station, near boundary fence, near rabbit dropping piles. ?Fox.

David Meadow says Neophoca territorial, harem pairing etc.
(behavior on rocks is likely to be quite diff to that on sand beaches; cf hookeri which is sandy beaches, Neophoca which is rocks. Pups born at c 2 1/2 ft; dark all over. Fur gradually bleaches to fawn/golden until moult which begins @ 3 months. Moulted by 6 months to adult colouration which is v. similar to ad[?] female - golden belly, ashy grey back. Moult starts in mid back . Can suckle for 1 yr +. 3/4 grown animals found suckling!

Arctocephalus snout looks as though its been in a pencil sharpener cf hookeri
