W.A. Society of Arts.—The first of a series of monthly “sketch night”
meetings was held in the Society’s rooms, at Hamburg Chambers, on
Wednesday evening last, and proved a most pleasant gathering. The meeting
was well attended, and the proceedings began by devoting some time to
sketching, one member kindly acting as model. Then followed a social
farewell to Mr. J. W. Linton, who is on the eve of his departure for
twelve months to England. The president, Mr. G. T. Poole, in a happy
speech, eulogised the efforts made by Mr. Linton to aid the advancement of
art and assist the progress of the Society, and begged him to take the
greatest care of the return half of his ticket. His remarks were endorsed
by the vice-president, Mr. B. H. Woodward, who further remarked that it
was through Mr. Linton he had become acquainted with his father, Sir James
D. Linton, who had rendered invaluable assistance to the State in the
selection for the Art Gallery of a number of old masters, including
Vandyck and Tintoretto, a distinction not enjoyed by our sister States.
The Society all wished Mr. Linton, his wife and family “”bon voyage and
bon retour.” Mr. Linton suitably responded, and said his departure would
take more the form of a visit to improve his knowledge in certain phases
of the arts and crafts. He wished the Society every success. After
refreshments, a criticism was given on the sketch compositions and the
meeting closed.
