The polymathic Wallace is best known for his role in formulating the theory of evolution through natural selection. This is an online virtual issue of papers that have appeared in Linnean Society journals to mark the centenary of his death. Four were written by Wallace himself and represent but a fraction of his prolific output, a larger sample of which can be accessed from the 'The Alfred Russel Wallace Page'. The remaining 13 papers are more recent and were written by some of the many authors inspired by Wallace's ideas and his role in the history of evolutionary thought.
